Background
Jay Heifetz and Robert Winter mixed the world of business with the arts, entertainment and humanities to create Calliope Media in 1994. For Heifetz, a businessman, and Winter, a well-known multimedia author/performer and UCLA music professor, Calliope is a partnering of kindred spirits, eager to change the texture of the interactive software industry by taking risks and making a statement with the titles they produce. "We chose the name 'Calliope,'" explains Heifetz, "after both the Greek muse of epic poetry and the steam-driven, musical instrument from the circus. Robert and I thought it particularly fitting to name the company after an instrument -- something that would remain silent if not for the right components." Ironically, the polar musical abilities of the duo's fathers helped plant the seed for both Heifetz and Winter to get into the business. "My father is tone-deaf and I had this fantasy of teaching him how to listen to music," said Winter "On the other hand, Jay's father was the famous violinist -- I guess you could say it was in our blood from the start."
